The dangerous goods driver licence course provides knowledge of the current Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods and the responsibilities associated with the transport of dangerous goods. This course leads to issue of a dangerous good driver licence which is mandatory for people who operate vehicles that transport dangerous goods in a receptacle with a capacity greater than 500 litres/kilograms.

Participants need to complete both theory and practical assessments which includes the following:

  • Statutory requirements and responsibilities;
  • Classification and packing of dangerous goods;
  • Placarding unit, package lads, containers and vehicles;
  • Stowage and segregation;
  • HAZCHEM code;
  • Emergency equipment;
  • Transport procedures and documentation.

Students are required to complete the mandatory assessment instrument (MAI), consisting of theory and scenario based short answer and multiple choice questions as issued by the competent authority panel.

Upon successful completion, participants are issued a Statement of Attainment for the following unit(s) of competency:

TLILIC0001 Licence to transport dangerous goods by road.

This unit forms part of TLI31216 Certificate III in Driving Operations. Once this training is completed, students must complete and online application with the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety to apply for or renew their Dangerous Goods Driver Licence.

Participants of this course receive a copy of TCE's Dangerous Goods Drivers Manual.

Applications must be lodged online - through the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (formerly known as DMP) within 6 months of the date of training.

You must have electronic copies or all accompanying documentation ready to attach for your electronic submission.

All accompanying application documents (e.g. Medical Certificate, Police Clearances and Statement of Attainment for your training) must be dated within 6 months of the date you lodge your application. Failure to provide these documents may delay the issuing of your licence, or prevent your application from being accepted.

If you have held a licence within any other state or territory other than Western Australia within the past 5 years, and are aware that you have incurred infringements, loss of demerit points or a conviction, you need to obtain copies of your driving record from that state or territory to accompany your application.

For a full checklist on what you need to lodge with your application please refer to DMIRS Dangerous Goods Driver Licence general information sheet.
